What is the Pong Research warranty for your products – how long does it last and what does it cover?
We stand behind our Pong cases, and your satisfaction is very important to us! At any time in the first 60 days after purchase, if your Pong case does not meet your expectations, you can return it for a replacement or refund. Currently, we are only able to refund the original purchaser. If it was a gift, we are happy to exchange the case for another case at the same price. How does Pong technology work?
Your cell phone device contains antennas enabling it to communicate with cellular networks. These antennas emit radio-frequency (RF) energy in order to operate. That energy is absorbed by the body when the device is near.
Each Pong case is equipped with technology that redirects and redistributes this energy towards the back of the device and away from your head and body. Pong’s technology is internationally patented and works by a process of electromagnetic interaction using passive antennas (known as a Coupled Antenna System) embedded in each case. The built-in antenna pairs automatically when you snap the case on.
Why are the stats different for each case?
Every phone has a unique antenna, and resulting wireless energy pattern. Therefore the Pong technology must be custom engineered to work with that particular phone and model. As a result individual stats will vary. The Pong Case and Pong Rugged Case differ in construction and materials, and these variables influence the Pong technology so that stats may differ between different case types. The Pong technology is optimized to function most efficiently in its particular case, and may appear differently or produce different stats.
Why is the gold not visible in the entire grid on the back of my case? Is the case defective?
The gold is not a design feature but the antenna, that actually is the core piece of our technology – it will look different for each phone, carrier and version of case and that is intended – it does not mean the case is defective, but means that the antenna is optimized for that particular case/phone.
How does the Pong Case protect me?
A Pong case protects you by redirecting the RF energy emitted by the mobile device so less is absorbed by you. This allows more to be available for signal. This RF wireless energy emitted by mobile devices is a form of non-ionizing radiation. Some scientific studies have reported human effects from exposure to RF wireless energy.
How does the Pong iPad case reduce your RF energy exposure?
The Pong case for iPad (and iPad mini) has two built-in antennas: one for the iPad’s Wi-Fi antenna located near the bottom of the iPad; and one for the cellular antenna located near the top of the iPad. The emitted radio-frequency (RF) energy is most intense closest to the iPad’s antennas. A: 10 Ways to Limit your Cell Phone Radiation Exposure
The most effective, practical and proven way to protect yourself from unnecessary exposure to cell phone radiation, while also optimizing your mobile device’s performance, is to use a Pong case. Pong reduces your exposure to wireless energy below the FCC limit, without requiring lifestyle changes. Pong works at all times, whether you’re talking, texting, or simply wearing your phone.
In the event Pong technology is not available for your particular mobile device, Pong Research recommends the following precautions to help protect yourself and your loved ones from unnecessary cell phone radiation exposure:
1. Follow the phone manufacturer’s warnings found in your owner’s manual and avoid using or carrying your cell phone against your head or body at all times.
2. Follow FTC advice to avoid using products on your cell phone that claim to “shield” cell phone emissions, because they may interfere with the phone’s signal. This may cause it to draw even more power and possibly emit more radiation. (Pong does not shield radiation. Instead it redirects and redistributes radiation, to reduce your exposure.)
3. Do not use a cell phone case unless it has been proven not to increase SAR or weaken your cell phone signal. Many standard cases can weaken the cell phone’s signal, shorten battery life, or increase radiation emissions.
4. Children should only use cell phones for emergencies. Cell phone radiation penetrates a child’s brain more deeply than an adult brain.
5. Whenever possible, text rather than talk. If a call must be made, use the speakerphone or a wired headset.
6. Limit the length of your cell phone conversations. Use a corded landline phone if available. Do not use a cordless phone for long conversations.
7. Switch sides regularly during a cell phone call to reduce radiation exposure to one side of your head.
8. Avoid using your cell phone when the signal is weak or when moving at high speed, such as in a car or train. These scenarios increase the transmit power of the phone in an attempt to connect to the nearest cell tower.
9. When making a call, wait for the call to connect before placing the phone next to the ear. The phone emits the most intense radiation during the initial connection, then lowers its power once a connection is established.
10. Turn your cell phone off or put it in airplane mode when not in use. If you must leave your cell phone on at night, keep your cell phone away from your head and body while you are sleeping. Your phone continues to emit radiation even when you are not making a call.
Since Pong cases disperse more radiation to the back of the device, would it give higher exposure to people nearby? Should I stay away from my children when I am using it? If so, how far away?
Cell phone radiation is most intense in areas right next to the antenna, it is this intense radiation that poses the greatest risk to the users, and that Pong redirects and redistributes. The further you are away from your phone, the intensity of cell phone radiation and your risk for exposure decreases.
In fact, cell phone radiation is >100 times less intense at a distance of 10 cm away from the cell phone antenna compared to 1 cm. So as long as your children and other people stay a few inches away from your mobile device when in use, the radiation intensity they are exposed to is very low and should not raise any known health concerns.
Since Pong cases redirect the radiation away from the user’s head, does Pong affect the mobile device’s ability to communicate with the cell tower?
Yes – Pong actually improves your communication with the cell tower. How?
Without a Pong case, a cell phone user can be absorbing up to 68% of the radiation that your phone is emitting. This actually creates a dead zone on the other side of your head (see the dark blue indent in Figure 1 below) which reduces the strength of the signal on the opposite side of the head to where your phone is being held.
Pong’s technology modifies the radiation pattern around your cell phone – so that less radiation is absorbed by you. In doing so, it also creates a more diffuse signal pattern that can more easily propagate around the head. The result is a more uniform radiation pattern even on the side of the head opposite the phone, which enables better communication with the nearest cell tower. This improved connectivity leads to optimized battery life as the cell phone will then be working “less hard” for the connection. The impact of Pong’s technology on the signal pattern can be seen in Figure 2 below.

What about using a Bluetooth headset?
When it comes to hands-free devices, although wired or Bluetooth headsets can reduce cell phone radiation exposure to the head, they can present other problems. Wireless headsets such as a Bluetooth earpieces generate low but constant wireless energy exposure in the range of 2400-2480 MHz. Wired headsets may also couple radiation into user’s head and result in a localized increase of exposure (Kühn S. et al., 2009). When using hands-free devices, moreover, many users keep their phones on their bodyies, ignoring the manufacturers' instructions to keep devices away from the body. Apple expressly advises consumers, for example, not to carry the iPhone in a pocket or otherwise within 15mm (5/8 of an inch) of their bodies. One study shows that up to 7 times SAR can result when a cell phone is placed in a shirt pocket during a hands-free call, with the back of the cell phone (where the antenna is typically located) facing the skin (Kang, G., Gandhi, O. P. 2002). In such a situation, the device can exceed the safety limit for human exposure. Pong Research recommends that users do not keep their phones in pockets or on their persons when in use,- but, both for talking and body-worn configurations, a Pong case will significantly reduce cell phone radiation exposure.
If the radiation from a cell phone with a Pong case on it is directed to the back of the phone, how will this affect the hand that is holding the phone?
Although the outbound signal increases in the direction away from the user, the redistribution of the electromagnetic field by the Pong case ensures that energy from the back of the phone is dispersed in a more diffuse field pattern, and not in an intense beam.
How does Pong affect the signal strength of my mobile device?
Your phone needs both an outbound signal and an incoming signal to communicate. Pong cases can improve outbound signal strength from the phone to the cell tower.
Your mobile device relies on radiofrequency (RF) energy to communicate with the cell tower. When that energy is absorbed by your body, it weakens the signal strength of your mobile device, which can affect range and increase dropped calls. Does Pong affect the battery life of my mobile device?
A Pong case can improve your battery life. How?
Your phone’s battery life is directly related to the power drain of the device – which is impacted by two things: how frequently you use your device and how far away you are from the cell tower. Poor signal strength makes your mobile device work harder to communicate with the cell tower by transmitting more power, which shortens the battery life of your device. Pong optimizes the signal strength of your mobile device by redirecting and redistributing, rather than reducing, your cell phone’s radiation. This means that your device doesn’t have to transmit more power to communicate with the cell tower. As a result, the battery life of your device with a Pong case may be improved.

Can I use a Pong case designed for a specific phone model for other phones?
No. Pong Cases are designed to work on with specific phones and their wireless carriers, unless otherwise stated. Every Pong case contains custom-engineered built-in antenna technology that only works with the unique antenna structure of a particular model of mobile device.
Regarding the Pong iPad case, how does it protect you if the iPad is on your lap while using it?
The Pong technology inside the case redistributes the radiation from both the iPad’s Cellular and Wi-Fi antennas, effectively spreading the signal thus reducing the intensity, while making more signal available for communication to the cell tower or router (for Wi-Fi). This results in a lower level of radiation exposure for your body.
Would my Pong case work if I travel overseas?

What are Pong cases made of?
Pong cases are light, durable and made from high quality materials. All Pong cases are consist of a form-fitting, lightweight polycarbonate shell, which offers outstanding strength and durability. The built-in antenna is made of copper, which is plated in pure gold to protect it from corrosion. The entire antenna is less than 100 microns (μm) thick. The Pong Rugged Case also has a “rubber” (TPE) rim to provide additional protection. Should I worry about cell phone radiation?
The increased reliance on cell phones, even among children, many of whom spend hours on the phone, or carry devices on their person has led to an increasing concern about the health effects of cell phone radiation, especially for children, long term users and heavy users. As yet, there is insufficient research data on whether there is a definitive link to cancer or other adverse health effects from long-term and regular cell phone use.
However, the body of evidence supporting a concern is growing:
- In 2011, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study that shows that just 50 minutes of cell phone use affects brain activity in the area of brain closest to the phone.
- In May 2011, scientific evidence indicating adverse health effects of cell phone radiation prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to classify cell phone radiation as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”, in the same category as lead and engine exhaust.
- A 2012 U.S. study by researchers from Yale School of Medicine found that exposure to radiation from cell phones during pregnancy affects the brain development of offspring, potentially leading to hyperactivity.
- A growing body of research also indicates that exposure to cell phone radiation may lead to decreases in sperm count, sperm motility and vitality.
- Recent studies have also shown that the current cell phone certification process may substantially underestimate radiation absorption for most cell phone users, especially children and smaller adults.
Given these concerns, Pong believes you should adopt a "precautionary principle" in practice. We recommend you take preventive and pro-active approaches, such as using a Pong case on your mobile device to protect you and your loved ones from potentially harmful cell phone radiation.
Pong claims to reduce exposure to wireless energy SAR below the FCC limit. But what is SAR? What is the FCC SAR limit?
SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate and is a metric for measuring the rate at which cell phone radiation is absorbed by the human body. In the United States, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) sets the limit for public exposure to cell phone radiation to be a SAR level of 1.6 watts per kilogram, averaged over 1 gram of body tissue. This means that for a phone to receive FCC certification and be sold in the U.S., its maximum SAR level must not exceed 1.6 watts per kilogram.
Why do different case collections have different SAR reductions?
The Pong antenna technology is uniquely designed for optimum performance in the material in which it is embedded. As a result, our different case collections (e.g. Classic, Rugged and Select), which differ slightly in construction, have different Pong antennas and therefore different SAR reductions.
How can I find out the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of my cell phone?
The FCC maintains a SAR database, and to start checking on your device you'll need its FCC ID number. It's usually on the case of the cell phone, although you might have to remove its battery pack to find the number. Once you have the number, you can go to the FCC web site (http://transition.fcc.gov/oet/ea/fccid/) and follow the instructions.
Most manufacturers also include the information in their product manuals as well as on their websites. Other sites also provide access to the SAR levels of cell phones, including CNET (http://reviews.cnet.com/cell-phone-radiation-levels/).
Which way should my phone face when carrying it in my pants or shirt pocket?
We advise keeping your phone away from your body, but if you must, when placing your phone in your pocket, make sure that the front of the phone is facing your body and that the back of the Pong case is facing away from your body. This way the radiation is being redirected away from your body.
When was Pong Technology developed?
The Pong technology was first conceived ten years ago. As phones have evolved since then, Pong cases have adapted to changes in technology.
Is the Pong Technology heat sensitive?
The case will withstand heat to a certain degree. However, we do not recommend leaving it out in direct sunlight or in heat over an extended period of time.
If I drop my phone will the Pong Case protect it? Do you guarantee my phone won't be damaged?
Pong offers cases with two levels of the protection: the form-fitting Pong Case provides protection from every day bumps and scrapes; the Pong Rugged Case provides greater protection – it has been independently certified to exceed the US Military Standard Drop test, and can protect your phone from drops of 6ft.
Is the front glass protected so that if the phone is laid on a flat surface, only the case would touch, not the glass of the phone?
At a minimum, our cases are designed so that if you lay your phone on a flat surface, the edges of the case will keep the front glass of the phone from touching it. The glass is thus protected.
Does the Pong Case have a cutout to accommodate most headphone jacks?
As a featured design, your Pong case permits easy access to all controls and ports, as well as to the headphone jack area. The Pong case is designed to work with the accessories supplied with your phone. Every effort is made to accommodate common accessories, but not all 3rd party accessories may be compatible.
Does Pong warranty the functioning of the antenna embedded in the case?
